What do you Google?

Today Google released the Google Zeitgeist, basically a compilation of all the web searches over the year. It’s quite interesting to look at. A few notable results:

Britney Spears and Paris Hilton top the list of most girls searched.

Britney Spears and Paris Hilton top the list of total searches.

That really amazes me. The most stuff people search for is about pop divas? Interesting.. anyways, there are lots of other interesting topics on there, including top searched sports, political figure, computer stuff, and more. Check out the website here: http://www.google.com/press/zeitgeist.html

Spring Classes Start in 4 Weeks!!

Ugh, what an awful thought. Everyone I told it to (idea from Tessier) scolded me, claiming they don’t want to think for the next four weeks. Having an exam at the last possible time, 4 days before Christmas will do that to you. As a large group of my class, about 20-30 of us, were studying in the library before the test, you could just SEE the apathy in everyone’s facing. Around the room you’d hear “what do you think’s going to be on this test?” … and more than that you’d hear “I don’t even care anymore.” Even the nerdy nerds (I mean, lets face it, the e-school is nerdy) were apathetic. But.. even after a miserable exam.. we’re DONE! All students! Finally home!

Now I’m home, being completely worthless. My entire family is coming here over the next few days, so I’ve been kicked to the computer room couch (sprad’s bed). We all went to the Commodore, a movie theatre that serves you dinner while you watch, and saw Meet the Fockers. Despite the negative reviews, we all really enjoyed it. It took everything that worked from Meet the Parents and added Gaylord Focker’s free-living, hippie parents. Both Hoffman and Streisand were entertaining to watch, as much as I hate to say that about Streisand (can we say communist?). Which brings me to another point: How can an actress who didn’t even go to college feel they are smart enough to preach politics and scold politicians and Americans who more than certainly have a degree? Just a thought…

So now my family has gotten ahold of Karaoke, and it’s all been downhill. If there’s one thing the Gilmore family gene pool does not have.. it’s singing ability. Looks like a few more days of hearing “Girls just want to have fun!” and “Sittin on the Dock of the Bay” performed awfully..

Hope all the students are thoroughly enjoying their break… there is nothing better than being home with family and being WORTHLESS! ENJOY!

It’s Getting Quiet in CVille..

Jay went home today. Ashley and the rest of the 1206 girls went home yesterday. It’s getting colder outside (possibility of snow), and I’m STILL here. I can’t even explain to you my hatred towards this Tuesday exam. If you’re at home or finished with your exam and you are reading this, you’re very fortunate!

On that note, I’m off to study and get things done. I felt a bitter post was necessary.

What really makes a movie great?

So this week I saw both Oceans Twelve and National Treasure. Both movies entertaining, I didn’t find them to be good movies. But I quickly realized that my opinions differed from those who I saw the movie with. Some of the people who saw the movies with me loved them. So I ask myself this: what does make a movie great? Is it the acting? The storyline? Should it be if the movie is entertaining?

Take, for instance, Oceans Twelve. I was a HUGE fan of Oceans Eleven, as I thought it was witty, well done, and had a great plot twist. I highly anticipated Oceans Twelve, but when I saw it my expectations hit rock bottom. While the acting was amazing, and the movie definitley entertaining (how can watching Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bernie Mac, Julia Roberts, Catherine Zeta Jones, etc. not be entertaining..?), the plot fell so short. In my opinion, without giving it away, the end “plot twist” was a bust. It was almost a cop out. Same for National Treasure – Nicholas Cage and cast put on an entertaining movie. The story, while far fetched, was fun to watch. But the movie itself was a bit off – there were awful jokes, parts of bad acting, big plot holes, and extremley unrealistic parts. But when it boils down to it, since I was entertained is that a good movie?

I guess it really comes down to what you expect. I tend to think of myself more a movie snob. I love watching movies, even if they are bad, but I hold them to high expectations. An entertaining movie might be good for that day, but great movies last long beyond the first time. I still recommend seeing both Oceans Twelve and National Treasure, you will more than likely enjoy them. Whether or not you consider a great movie, well, is up to you.

TTZ & BER

This was actually a license plate Jay and I saw today while driving around Charlottesville.. how can you not love the South?

On another note.. here’s a conversation Jay and Tyler had that is classic:

Tyler: “Jay, bartender is on!”
Jay: “I’ve never heard of bartender Tyler.”
Tyler: “You know, the cruise movie.”
Jay: “You mean Cocktail?”
Tyler: “Its bartender dude.”
Jay: “Cocktail.
Tyler: “Well thats a stupid name!”

Here Comes the Cold…

It’s finally getting cold in VA. A cold front is moving through, and it doesn’t look like it’ll be warming up. I like it, though, because you just can’t have a warm Christmas. I remember waking up one Christmas and being able to wear shorts outside.. and it just felt… weird. I’m definitley partial to the White Christmas, although that may be a stretch.

Pictures from our Christmas Party are up in the webshots. We had a pretty great night, as various people stopped by throughout the night. We bought two kegs (one of which we didn’t even tap) and 35 bottles of champagne. We also had some decorations and food. The theme of the party was “Tacky Christmas” as people wore tacky sweaters, santa hats, christmas lingerie, etc. Unfortunatley, since I was studying the entire week prior, I didn’t have time to buy a silly Christmas outfit, but my green shirt/santa tie/santa hat did me well. The highlight of the night would definitley be Karaoke Revolution, as drunken girls and guys sang all night.

I just finished my physics exam, which was pretty rough. Thankfully, the class is on a curve, so I could have only gotten a 45%, but the average may even be a 40% (and it’s very possible). Before the exam, our TA told us the professor liked having an equal distribution of multiple choice answers. Since there were 50 questions, and options A B C D E, I figured I’d go 10 for each. I kept a little tally sheet of the answers I knew, and when I went back through the test to do my guessing, I used that as a reference. I’ll let you know if it paid off or not..

Now I only have a takehome test (due Sat) and an exam (next Tuesday).. needless to say, I’ll be chilling out for a bit. Goodluck on all your exams!

Library on a Friday Night?

Yes, for what might be the first (and hopefully last time), I’ve been here studying at Clemons on a Friday nigyt.. and what a horrible decision it is. I’m not a huge fan of the library in the first place. If (roommates permitting) I can get work done at my house, I’d much rather do so. I feel like the library is more a social hangout then study area, and think people just like to hang out there to make themselves feel like they’ve been doing work.

“Hey man, where have you been all day?”
“Oh wow, I’ve been at the library ALL day!”
“Really? (impressed) You must have gotten a lot of work done!”
“Yea, I did (really sat around, talked to girls, checked email, took a nap, etc).”

Anyways, the library is pretty dead for a Friday night, even considering it’s the start of exam week. I feel like I’m the only person who has an exam Saturday. Granted, the exam period starts Monday.. which brings me to another question? Why did my teacher/classmates want to move the exam to Saturday? I’m all for taking it earlier – but Saturday? I’m still baffled.

A group of guys and girls, maybe 30-40, ran through the entire library screaming/dancing in a line. It was pretty humorous. They were wearing all sorts of ridiculous outfits like spandex, headbands, short shorts, etc. It was a good study break for most, but I’m sure there were a few people really angry about it. And if you’re one of those people that gets angry over something humorous like that, at 12:00 on a Friday night, then you need to live a little..

On that note, I’m going to drop by Phi Psi and make sure its not burning down, then going to study more. My exam is at 10:00 tomorrow, and when it’s over, I’ll have to start preparing for Physics (wimper) Monday. Then I have 8 free days… great work StudCo.

Why I hate (love) the Eschool Reason #40349

So my teacher tells us that we can either finish Lab 6 and turn it in, or take a test. Hmm… clearly the better choice is finishing the lab, since you’d have it done and complete and you’d know it works. So after working on it all week, for at least 10+ hours and getting no where, I start to contemplate “Do I start studying for the test? Or do I look at this lab more? But if I keep looking at the lab, and don’t get it to work, then that’s just wasted time.” This inner-ego struggle occurred throughout the entire night, until finally I threw in the towel and starting studying for the test.

CS Labs can be the most frustating things in the entire world. There is absolutley no correlation (well, barely) between amount of time spent and amount of progress in lab. You can work on one section for 3 hours, which someone else may have figured out (whether by help, luck, or genius) in 30 minutes. It’s funny, because I’ll be talking to Ashley after working in the lab for over 5 hours, and she’ll say “You’re still not done?!” and automatically assumes I’ve been doing nothing. Ha. I can’t even wait till next semester, when I’m taking Operating Systems, Advanced Software Development, and Database Management. Weeeeeee.

I’d like to show you a screenshot of my Computer Architecture Lab, just to show you how miserable it is:

And that’s just the frontend of it all. After connecting all those little gates and such, you have to code it and such. Nasty. On that note, I’m off to study econ for the remainder of the evening. Phi Psi is having a party tonight for those of you who are fortunate enough not to have to study tonight.. good luck studying.

New Orleans: The Sin City

For those of you who don’t know, two of my roommates are from New Orleans, Louisiana. After we hear stories of their drunken high school moments and thanksgiving break craziness, we remind them that they live in a truley unique city. No, better yet, they live in the Sin City of the USA. Now many of you may think, “But that’s what Las Vegas is coined?!” Low and Behold, as Mr. Mark Tessier likes to tell me, that Las Vegas got that name from, who else, but New Orleans. One trip down their for Mardi Gras only solidified my beliefs. Now don’t get me wrong, I had a fantastic time, it’s a great place to party, but it’s still the Sin City.

This article here only proves it. I rest my case. Long live the drinking debauchery of New Orleans, Louisiana (starting in the 4th grade).

I’m wearing sandals and a short sleeve shirt..

and it’s December! High of 66 today! What’s going on here? So much for a White Christmas. While I must admit, the weather has been gorgeous, and Charlottesville even more so, this isn’t Christmas weather! Maybe Global Warming is really kicking in… or maybe the weather will surprise us and turn around and bite us in the butt and give us months of ice and snow… ick. I might as well enjoy it while I can..

On another note, it’s 12 degrees and snowing in Vail =)

We’re headed to VAIL!

It’s official. The flight is booked. The hotel is reserved. I’m going to Vail, baby! Right now, Baggio, Tyler, and I are set to go to vail for a week long trip full of snowboarding. Sprad is checking if he can get off work tomorrow, and hoping he can, is going to book his flight tomorrow as well. There’s even talk of Ashley and Nan coming for part of the week!

We’re leaving early January 8th, snowboarding all week, and returning January 15th. We’re staying in a place only 10 minutes from Vail, 5 minutes from Beavercreek. We’ll probably ski 5 days (maybe 6), at one of five resorts: Vail, Beavercreek, Keystone, Breckenridge, and Araphoe Basin. Plenty of fresh power for us to snowboard on. I hope to get to snowmobile as well.

Here’s what I’ll be seeing in only a few weeks:

UVA Basketball Drops a Close One to Iowa State

The streak had to end. I was waiting for it. Going 6-0 against decent teams in the preseason was just abnormal. In previous years, we’ve had a cupcake preseason schedule – spanking teams until we got to the ACC. But this year we actually have defeated reputable opponents including then ranked #10 Arizona, “in-state rival” Richmond, and Northwestern (although not really a good team). Of course, many UVA students might have jumped on the basketball bandwagon. I mean, football is a lost cause, basketball is ranked #19 in the country, we might have a glory season!

Well, tonight put that all in perspective.

Don’t get me wrong, I believe our team played hard. Iowa State’s stadium was loud, I mean real loud. At times in the second half, Iowa State went up by 14 points and UVA would rally to tie the game. Devin Smith had a phenominal game, scoring 40 points (25 in the first half). It was an honest effort. But we lost a game we shouldn’t have. Anyone watching the game may have seen some of stupid decisions made that cost us the game. Let’s point them out: Jason Clark getting two technical fouls. That’s right, not one, but two. Both were stupid, shoving after the play, I’m-a-tough-guy fouls. He wasn’t the only one, as proven freshmen leader Sean Singletary had 4 fouls early in the second half. But the thing that appals me, absolutely BLOWS my mind (even though it’s expected), is Pete Gillen’s game-time coaching. He called ALL of his second-half timeouts with 8:50 still remaining. Two of which he called 10 seconds before the TV timeout (for those of you who aren’t aware, the team’s are informed when TV timeouts will be called before the game). Did Gillen think he wouldn’t need a timeout near the end of a game? A game that was back and forth, neck and neck, and easily looked to be coming down to the last minute? Right when I saw we were out of timeouts, I looked to Jay and said “We’re going to need a timeout in the last few minutes, and we won’t have one.” Well, we could have used them. With only a minute or two left, Devin Smith jumped on a loose ball and could have called a timeout to keep possession, yet forced a jump ball and gave a crucial possession back to Iowa State. Then, UVA lets Iowa State come down the court (with UVA up by 2) and drains a 3 pointer with 15 seconds left. Again, UVA could have used a timeout to setup their defense. 15 second left, UVA takes the ball down the court and loses it out of bounds. They setup an inbound pass, quickly, and Iowa State forced a turnover. Could have used a timeout there. But we were given yet another chance, as we fouled them with 9 seconds left and the player only converted on 1 of the 2 foul shots. Only down by two with 9 seconds, we had plenty of time to set up a play and get down the court… but we couldn’t think about it. We inbound right to Sean Singletary, he goes coast to coast and makes a spin move to the basket, laying it up too soft. We miss the first tip, then the second, and that’s game. In the last two minutes, there were at least 3 instances where a timeout would have benefited us greatly, giving us a better opportunity to win the game. Gillen should really consider if calling them that early (when a tv timeout was near) was really worth it. I wonder what he said to them during the TV timeout, after had just called a timeout 10 seconds early. I can see it now -> “(during the TV timeout) Ok guys… well, run the same offense we just setup in our timeout…”.. What were his Assistant’s thinking?

I’m not putting down UVA Basketball. I’m optimistic that our players have the skill to surprise people this year and cause a few upsets. But in a conference with superior coaching and programs, I don’t think we can do it. If Gillen continues to make awful game-time decisions, it’ll be a long season for Wahoo basketball fans.

The Calm Before the Storm

We’re in that home stretch, and one of the worst parts of it too. Classes are almost over, projects and tests to be turned in, and we’re about to be hit hard in a week by exam after exam after exam. It doesn’t help that all our neighboring friends finish their exams this week, or that Christmas will be only 4 days after I finish my last exam either. Must… focus..

On another note… I found this cartoon printed in the Cavalier Daily, and it made me laugh:

We bought Karaoke Revolution for the xbox yesterday. For those of you that haven’t heard of it, it’s a game that has 50+ songs that you sing. When you sign, you try to hit the correct pitch in the song, and it grades you on your performance. If you do well, the crowd cheers and gets really into it, and if you do poorly – you can be booed off the stage. The game is phenominal, and my house must’ve played it for over 5 hours combined yesterday. I highly recommend it to anyone. Now they just need to release a game where you dance and sing at the same time…One of my friend’s, Danny, started up his own blog. He’s over in Europe playing for Arsenal (which, for those of you who aren’t in the soccer know, is an amazing club team). You can check it out here: http://www.dannyk.us/

Want to send a letter to Santa?

The USPS issued a formal message to all parents and kids, giving out the address to the Jolly Red Man himself. Parents are instructed to send the children’s letter inside a small envelope, then place that envelope into a larger envelope with the address given. The “North Pole” will specially postmark it and send back a response. If you’d like to send a letter to Santa – here is his address:

Master/Slave offensive?

I found a really funny article talking about the term “Master and Slave” when referring to hard drives.

For those of you who don’t know (and should), when a hard drive is the “master”, it’s the primary hard drive. When it’s the “slave”, it’s the secondary hard drive. Hence the names.

Apparently, people found this offensive and wrong, and are attempting to change it. You can view the article here.

My Free Ipod Came Today!

A conspicuous brown box appeared on my doorstep this morning, and amazingly it was my free ipod!

For those of you who aren’t familiar, the website http://www.freeipods.com/ offers you the ability to recieve a free ipod. No – it’s not a scam, it is real. Here’s how it works: you complete one of the multiple offers from their sponsors.. these are mostly contractual deals such as Columbia House, Diet Pills, New York Times, etc. I decided to do the Columbia House, since I’m a DVD junkie and figured I’d be buying DVD’s one way or the other. There are actually offers you can complete without ever paying a cent. Offers such as Ancestry and Infone require you to sign up for a trial service – which then you just cancel near the end of the time period. After you have completed your offer, you get 5 people to complete the offer underneath you. They must create an account underneath your name and complete the offer. IF this happens, you recieve a new ipod. You can choose from an Ipod mini or 20gb Ipod.

I easily got 5 people to sign up underneath me by a simple link in the profile. Within 2 or 3 weeks, I had well over 5. It took a while for it to ship, but that’s because the ipods are on such high demand/backorder (so they say). I was actually placed on hold (they basically banned my account) because apparently more there can’t be more than one account per address (luke and seth created an account), but they had already processed my order before they could ban it. Make sure you read the terms and conditions.

So here is a picture of the Ipod – all pretty and free. I highly recommend you trying the site out, especially if you really would like one but don’t want to fork over the cash. If you are interested in other such “free” offers, there are sites that offer free photo ipods, free computers, free flat screen monitors, and many more!

ACC Dominates in ACC/Big 10 Challenge

Ahh, right as college football dwindles down (or at least our hopes and aspirations for the year) college basketball gets in full swing. For the past three days, the annual ACC/Big Ten challenge was played. For those of you who don’t know, it’s an annual competition between the ACC teams (minus VT and Miami) vs Big 10 teams. In the 5 years of it’s existence, the ACC has won each time – and this year was no different. The ACC dominated with a 7-2 record.

If you happened to catch the UVA/Northwestern game, I feel sorry for you. While we’re currently ranked #25, don’t let that ranking fool you. We are not that good. The game was absolutley dreadful. Lots of turnovers, slow, and very low scoring. Now, the hoos did pull of a great upset in the Arizona win, and had a great game against Richmond, but the same ol Cavaliers we expect showed up tonight against a weak Northwestern team (1-4 in the first 5 games? come on!). We eeked out a win, though, and I suppose that’s all that matters. We’ll see how the hoos play when ACC competiton starts up.

As for the rest of the playing field, Wake got it absolutely handed to them by Illinois. Illinois looked amazing, almost flawless from the get go. They were ready to play, and the fans and homecourt was a huge issue. That, and the fact they could not miss a single shot. It was unbelievable. Maryland suffered a disappointing loss to Wisconsin, which is typical of Maryland. They pull of the miraculous ACC tournament championship last year, fall short in the tournament, return nearly all their players, and fall short tonight. It’s just one game, but not too out of the ordinary. UNC defeated Indiana – but it was pretty scrappy. For being one of my favorite teams, I’m getting a little nervous. In my opinion, they have the most starting talent then any team in the league… but they just are so flaky! Roy Williams needs to get them playing well consistently, and if so they’ll have a great look at the finals. The other games: Ewing and Reddick dominate for Duke as they defeat #9 Michigan State. Clemson barely beats Ohio State in a very ugly game. Florida State came from 15 behind with about 6 minutes left to beat Minnesota. And GT routed Michigan at home. No surprises.

The ACC proved it was the best basketball conference in the nation, and I can’t wait for it to get in full swing.tyle=”font-weight: bold;”>
